Television
One of the most popular mediums ever created was the television. The allure of television is that it combines moving pictures and sound which makes it omnipresent. The television created the decline of radios and soon the Internet will lead to the downfall of television too.
Like the radio, it was a huge success. In 1948 there were 1 million televisions in houses. By 1950 there were 8 million televisions in homes. Even then, only the upper-middle or upper class had them. Fourteen years after that, there were about 73 millions TVs in homes. This was all before televisions had color. After color came into the pictures, almost 97% of people had a television.
It's crazy to think that the tv influences us so much. I never realized how we compare regular life to what we see on tv. For example, there won't always be this coincidental, miraculous moment where you get saved by chance. A better example is that the relationships we see on tv isn't really what happens in reality.
